Oral care while wearing braces: Tips and Suggestions

Orthodontic treatment, or braces, is a highly effective method for a straight tooth structure and an aesthetic smile. However, the use of braces makes oral care even more important and demanding. Brackets, wires and other orthodontic materials facilitate the accumulation of food residues, which increases the risk of plaque formation and caries. Therefore, oral hygiene needs extra attention during the treatment process.
Here are the care recommendations to be considered when using braces:
1. Brush your teeth at least twice a day
Braces wearers should brush their teeth not only in the morning and evening, but also after every meal. The brushing process should be as follows:
Orthodontic toothbrushes with soft bristles should be preferred.
The top and bottom of the teeth and around the braces should be brushed carefully.
Brushing should be done for at least 2 minutes.
The toothbrush should be renewed regularly (approximately every 2-3 months).
2. Do Not Skip Interfacial Cleaning
Although flossing becomes difficult due to brackets, interfacial cleaning should not be neglected.
Orthodontic floss (floss with special tips) or
Interdental brushes (tiny brushes) should be used to clean between the brackets.
In order to prevent plaque formation between the teeth, it is recommended to do it every day, not several times a week.
3. Support with Mouthwash
Antibacterial mouthwashes:
Reduce bacterial build-up,
Prevent bad breath,
Prevent gingivitis.
Fluoride mouthwashes are particularly useful for preventing cavities. It can be used 1 time a day (preferably at night).
4. Avoid Foods That Can Damage Braces
Some foods can damage brackets and wires or cause cleaning problems.
Things to avoid
Nuts with hard shells
Popcorn
Caramel, chewing gum, sticky candies
Hard fruits such as apples and carrots that are bitten whole (it is better to chop them)
5. Increase Water Consumption
Water helps to clean the inside of the mouth.
Consuming plenty of water instead of acidic drinks protects the health of both braces and teeth.
6. Keep Regular Orthodontic Checkups
Regular checkups during the orthodontic treatment process ensure both the correct functioning of the braces and the protection of oral health.
The dentist will assess your hygiene level and offer extra care recommendations if necessary.
If conditions such as abrasion, fracture or stinging are recognized early, the treatment process will go more smoothly.
7. Use Orthodontic Wax for Oral Discomfort
When braces are first fitted or after adjustments, irritation in the mouth can occur.
Orthodontic wax provides comfort by reducing the friction caused by the brackets.
It can be applied to the irritated area to provide relief.
Conclusion
The use of braces is a process that requires patience and discipline. At the end of this process, it is possible to have both aesthetically and functionally healthy teeth. However, regular and proper oral care is essential to achieve this goal. The habits developed will positively affect not only the treatment process but also your oral health after treatment.
Remember, a healthy smile starts with daily care!
